Audiences Shore Up ‘Couples Retreat’ at Box Office

“Couples Retreat,” Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau’s erection joke-filled flick about miserable, domesticated husbands and the wives that are too young/too hot for them (an all-male team clearly cast this movie) did surprisingly well at the box office this weekend, earning a sunny $35.3 million.

Because, hey, bad erection jokes never get old!  (Bad erections, on the other hand…)

Carlos Ponce’s sizable, um, talent must have driven people to theaters.  Because it certainly wasn’t the critics, who gave the movie such reviews as:

“‘Couples Retreat’: About as much fun as marriage counseling.

“Those involved got to spend weeks at a Bora Bora luxury resort; all we get is this not lousy but unmemorable tropical-vacation comedy.”

Everything about Couples Retreat feels plastic, though: the jokes, the trees, the extras, the attitudes. It’s dumbed-down entertainment aimed at a dumbed-down audience — the comedy equivalent of a McMansion.

Too bad the movie is spoiling the view.

Oh well.  Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau got the last laugh, and are probably rolling around in cash in their McMansions!
