Full disclosure: Elton John holds a special place in my heart. Sure, he’s a bitchy diva. And, sure, I DO refuse to call him “Sir.” However, Mr. Candy and I danced to “Something About The Way You Look Tonight” at our wedding. Awwww. We also saw him perform in Vegas. I must say, I rather enjoyed the show and him. He was charming in concert, often talking to the audience and cracking hilarious jokes about Celine Dion’s “skinny ass” that earned him a permanent place in my heart.
So I guess it’s no surprise I’m happy that Elton, who’d been shot down after announcing his desire to adopt a 14-month-old Ukrainian boy with HIV, is now being given a chance to at least help the child — I’m sure he needs it — and be a part of his life.
The 62-year-old singer had recently announced the boy called Lev had ”stolen his heart” and that he wanted to adopt him. However, his hopes were dashed after Ukraine’s family, youth and sports minister, Yuri Pavlenko, said the country’s laws would not allow it because Elton is too old and is in a same-sex relationship. Pavlenko has since had a change of heart — which I’m sure had NOTHING to do with a large “donation” of some sort (*AHEM*) — and said that Elton “has the right and opportunity to invite the family of this boy to visit him, take them under his guardianship and help him grow into a good person.”
He also suggested that the adoption could not take place because although Lev is being looked after in an orphanage, his mother (who has AIDS) is still alive.
Meanwhile, religious groups have been VERY open-minded (once again, may I just say, *AHEM*) about Elton’s compassion for this child. Why, Father Georgy Gulyaev of the Ukraine’s Donetsk Diocese of the Orthodox Church declared:
“Thank God it’s impossible under Ukrainian law for Elton John to adopt a child. The Church is strictly against same-sex marriages and the damage they cause. It’s written in Holy Scriptures that homosexual marriage and relations is a sin. It is a sin, it is against nature, and it represents the dead end of human development. People pretend to have good intentions, create semi-marriages and so-called families, and moreover they dare to adopt children. Unlike people who are blessed by God to create natural families, these are people who succumb to their passions. This is definitely a sin, there is no other word for it, and the church will never agree that people who have created same-sex “marriage” could also dare to adopt children. This applies to all, including Elton John. He is a sinner.”
Yes, how DARE Elton offer a stable, loving home for this abandoned baby with HIV. Burn him at the stake!
